Daniel Garbade traveled to Cuba in 2014 and since then has not stopped researching his Cuban roots. In this exhibition the artist shows us the fruits of this search, and the parallels and connections between the Cuba of his ancestors and today.

His grandfather Teodoro Garbade emigrated to Cuba at the end of the 19th century to work in the tobacco industry; he married Aida Heydrich Cubero, granddaughter of the illustrious Fernando Heydrich Klein, the engineer who designed and built the famous Matanzas Aqueduct. Fernando Heydirch besides being an engineer was an artist and sculptor, sculpting among others the bust of Bismark. Daniel Garbade, great-great-grandson and also an artist, follows in his wake, creating in 2016 the plaque on Bakunin's tomb commissioned by the Dadaists of the Cabaret Voltaire.

Garbade offers us in this exhibition, a collection of works that speak of his Cuban origins. They are portraits of his ancestors, self-portraits and some landscapes, composed of hundreds of photographs digitally worked to achieve the desired artistic effect. To narrate his story, Garbade uses fabrics, clothing and T-shirts as support for his works.

The title Vest + Menté alludes to clothing and the verb mentar: which means to make an explicit reference to a person or thing. Clothes have become a very important sign of identity, like selfies on cell phones. Clothes tell us about fashions and the ephemeral nature of the things that pass through our lives; but fashions also come back with different looks, as is the case of Garbade's look at his family's past in Cuba. If we approach the works in detail, we discover fine drawings on works by Goya among others; thus Garbade reinterprets his past, his DNA, reinterpreting part of the history of art.

The exhibition is completed with the series "volver a rodar"; formed by intervened photographs of objects that belonged to his ancestors.

During the confinement, Garbade dived into his physical and emotional attic, finding forgotten objects of his ancestors that spoke of movement. Old bicycles, old and rusty scooters that during the pandemic regain a new meaning of freedom, movement, escape and identity. They symbolize the return to the origin, now reinvented and reopened, celebrating life and memory again.

In this way he achieves a surprising and surreal aesthetic, at once familiar and new, giving new life to these old objects as if it were a film; a film that resumes its shooting. Thus Garbade encourages us to resume our lives, loaded with the past, the good and the bad; symbolizing the connection between the two eras, also between two moments, pre and post pandemic.

This series "back to shooting" has recently been selected and exhibited at the photography festival PHotoESPAÑA 21 in Madrid and at the Larnaca Biennale in Cyprus representing his country, Switzerland.

At the same time, a small exhibition of the artist's works will be shown at the Ludwig Foundation in La Habana, with a colloquium conference by Garbade with Cuban artists in which the works exhibited in Matanzas will be digitally projected.

Daniel Garbade viajó a Cuba en 2014 y desde entonces no ha parado de investigar en sus raíces cubanas. En esta exposición el artista nos muestra los frutos de esta búsqueda, y los paralelismos y conexiones entre la Cuba de sus antepasados y la actual.

Su Abuelo Teodoro Garbade emigró a Cuba a finales del siglo XIX para dedicarse a la industria del tabaco; se casó con Aida Heydrich Cubero, nieta del ilustre Fernando Heydrich Klein, ingeniero que ideó y construyó el famoso Acueducto de Matanzas. Fernando Heydirch además de ingeniero era artista y escultor, esculpiendo entre otros el busto de Bismark. Daniel Garbade tataranieto y también artista, sigue su estela; realizando en 2016 la placa de la tumba de Bakunin por encargo de los Dadaístas del Cabaré Voltaire.

Garbade nos brinda en esta muestra, una colección de obras que hablan de sus orígenes cubanos. Son retratos de sus antepasados, auto retratos y algunos paisajes, compuestos por cientos de fotografías digitalmente trabajadas para lograr el efecto artístico deseado. Para narrar su historia, Garbade se sirve de telas, vestimentas y camisetas como soporte para sus obras.

El título Vest + Menté hace alusión a vestimenta y al verbo mentar: que significa hacer una referencia explícita a una persona o una cosa. La ropa se ha convertido en una importantísima seña de identidad, como los selfis de los teléfonos móviles. La ropa nos habla de las modas y de lo efímero de las cosas que pasan por nuestra vida; pero las modas también vuelven con miradas distintas, como es el caso de la mirada de Garbade a su pasado familiar en Cuba.

Si nos acercándose al detalle a las obras, descubrimos dibujos finos sobre obras de Goya entre otros; así Garbade reinterpreta su pasado, su ADN, reinterpretando parte de la historia del arte.

La exposición se completa con la serie “volver a rodar”; formada por fotografías intervenidas de objetos que pertenecieron a sus ancestros.

Durante el confinamiento, Garbade buceó en su desván físico y emocional, encontrando objetos olvidados de sus antepasados que hablaban de movimiento. Viejas bicicletas, patinetes antiguos y oxidados que durante la pandemia recobran un nuevo significado de libertad, movimiento, fuga e identidad. Simbolizan pues la vuelta al origen, ahora reinventado y reinaugurado, celebrando de nuevo la vida y la memoria.

Consigue de esta manera una estética sorprendente y surrealista, a la vez familiar y nueva, dando nueva vida a estos objetos antiguos como si de una película se tratara; una película que retoma su rodaje. Así Garbade nos anima a retomar nuestras vidas, cargadas del pasado, de lo bueno y de lo malo; simbolizando la conexión entre las dos épocas, también entre dos momentos, pre y post pandémico. Esta serie “volver a rodar” ha sido recientemente seleccionada y expuesto en el festival de fotografía PHotoESPAÑA 21 en Madrid y en la Biennale de Larnaca en Chipre representando su país, Suiza.

Paralelamente se exhibiría una pequeña muestra de obras del artista en la Fundación Ludwig de la Habana, con una conferencia coloquio de Garbade con artistas cubanos en la que se proyectaría digitalmente las obras expuestas en Matanzas.

La exposición “Selfis del pasado” de Daniel Garbade, cierra el ciclo expositivo inaugural del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, del 17 de septiembre al 31 de diciembre de 2022.

El oratorio de San Felipe Neri es un marco excepcional para emocionarnos; un lienzo en blanco arquitectónico, ahora desacralizado, donde Garbade reflexiona sobre el tiempo y su captura, sobre el arte como presencia imperecedera y esencia de su tiempo.

“La Trinidad” del Greco creada para el monasterio de Santo Domingo de Silos de Toledo y actualmente en el Museo del Prado, con influencias de Miguel Ángel, Tintoreto y Durero, y que sirvió de inspiración para “El Guernica” de Picasso; es ahora también fuente de inspiración para Garbade en la muestra.

Garbade fragmenta “La Trinidad” en 15 lienzos en movimiento. Son collages de dibujos que actualizan la obra original, como su famoso cielo toledano recreado ahora por cientos de aviones en movimiento. Las piezas vivas del collage, se desprenden, caen al suelo, escapan del lienzo y participan de su tiempo. Así la obra original se fragmenta para cobrar un sentido nuevo, como la vida fragmentada del espectador narrada para reconstruirla, para captar su esencia.

La muestra se completa con collages fotográficos de objetos antiguos, como mantillas o sables, con los que el artista nos reta a cuestionar que no es el objeto sino su mirada, lo que lo hace actual o pasado.

Garbade nos brinda la oportunidad de explorar la relación actual del espectador con la obra de arte, exigiendo mayor protagonismo, formar parte de la obra, capturarla incluyéndose en ella. Los selfis son pues ahora la herramienta de contemplación del arte, la nueva forma de aproximarse a el. Los selfis son el nuevo souvenir de la experiencia artística, y tunearlo con filtros nos transforma en artista. Los selfis como collage de vida, de emociones, de tiempo secuestrado y diluido, donde nos apropiamos de todo lo deseado, y también del arte.

Así, durante la muestra Garbade invita al espectador a hacerse un selfi ante su obra y enviárselo, para ir creando entre todos una nueva obra en tiempo real, en constante creación y cambio, que será proyectada en el oratorio; siendo el espectador ahora, también creador y protagonista de la obra expuesta

Porque el arte se reinterpreta así mismo una y otra vez, con distintas miradas propias de su tiempo, en torno a temas esenciales al que ningún creador es ajeno: el tiempo y la esencia de nuestra presencia en él.

El oratorio es ESENCIA Y Garbade PRESENCIA, y juntos nos transportan y trascienden de lo sagrado a lo profano, de la mano del arte como alimento espiritual necesario que trasciende su tiempo.

Cuban artist Alexander Lobaina presents his work for the first time in Spain at Café Belen in Madrid, from February 21 to March 19, 2023. It is a selection of works from his famous series "Fervor de Cuba" exhibited at the National Museum of Brazil. The exhibition, organized by Vesaniart Art Gallery and Belén Artspace, is curated by Nuria Delgado and opens on February 21 at 7 pm. with the presence of artist.

The series "Fervor de Cuba", formed by more than 40 works of 40 x 60 cm. made in acrylic on cardboard, is a revisitation of the work made by Lobaina during the 90s. The series dialogues with movements especially significant for the artist such as pop art, hard edge or minimal art; also fusing direct references to his life and current society. The series has been created to be exhibited both in separate pieces or as a mural; generating in that case and given the scale and chromatic range, a hypnotic state in the viewer.

"My works contribute semantic and morphological elements as well as "staging" to the recurrent emblematic (of pop art roots) of my previous work, becoming true multi-referential palimpsests on many occasions. In a certain way, it is a reactualization of the discourse from the incorporation of slogans and images of the present time that establish a counterpoint with those that, without losing validity, refer us to the most rancid years of the so-called special period; all this through panels or sets of works that elude any discursive sequence or associative metaphor, pretending rather, given the scale, a hypnosis by the image or the nihilism resulting from the horror vacui (in the series Fervor de Cuba). To the contextual references (absorption or parody of posters, billboards, murals and graphics of all kinds; popular and kitsch painting and ultimately all the urban visual folklore) is added the direct dialogue with the history of art beyond the international pop art; now the Hard Edge with all its chromatic intensity, neutrality or non-referentiality and emphasis on the intellectual side of the pictorial expression and the Hard Core with its intentional and eloquent subliminality interact openly with elements taken from the immediate reality, resulting in effective weapons to dialogue and reflect on that same reality and power relations of all kinds: social, economic, technological, sexual (sexuality is one of the ways in which power penetrates bodies) that are established between human beings from their total nakedness, not defenselessness, beyond some attribute of power they may carry -pistol, plume or Indian chief's pipe, etc. (in the series On the Seduction of Power). This scheme of domination/subjugation is resolved through the seduction that power itself exerts through the image, a cultural transvestism, not at all recent, to which power has appealed in order to continue exercising its practices of authority. La serie “Fervor de Cuba” formada por más de 40 obras de 40 x 60 cm. realizadas en acrílico sobre cartulina, es una revisitación de la obra realizada por Lobaina durante la década de los 90. La serie dialoga con movimientos especialmente significativos para el artista como el pop art, hard edge o mínimal art; fundiendo también referencias directas a su vida y sociedad actual. La serie ha sido creada para exhibirse tanto en piezas separadas o como mural; generando en ese caso y dada la escala y gama cromática, un estado hipnótico en el espectador.

“Mis obras aportan elementos semánticos y morfológicos a la vez que de “puesta en escena” a la emblemática recurrente (de raigambre pop art) de mi obra precedente, llegando a constituir verdaderos palimpsestos multirreferenciales en no pocas ocasiones. De algún modo es una reactualización del discurso a partir de la incorporación de eslogan e imágenes del momento actual que establecen un contrapunteo con aquellas que, sin perder vigencia, nos remiten a los años más rancios del llamado periodo especial; todo ello mediante paneles o conjuntos de obras que eluden toda secuencia discursiva o metáfora asociativa, pretendiendo más bien, dada la escala, una hipnosis por la imagen o el nihilismo resultante del horror vacui (en la serie Fervor de Cuba). A las referencias contextuales (absorción o parodia de carteles, vallas, murales y gráfica de todo tipo; pintura popular y kitsch y en definitiva todo el folclor visual urbano) se le suma el dialogo directo con la historia del arte más allá del pop art internacional; ahora el Hard Edge con toda su intensidad cromática, neutralidad o no referencialidad y énfasis en el lado intelectual de la expresión pictórica y el Hard Core con su subliminalidad intencionada y elocuente interactúan abiertamente con elementos tomados de la realidad inmediata, resultando armas eficaces para dialogar y reflexionar sobre esa misma realidad y las relaciones de poder de todo tipo: sociales, económicas, tecnológicas, sexuales (la sexualidad es una de las formas por las que el poder penetra en los cuerpos) que se establecen entre los seres humanos desde su total desnudez, que no indefensión, más allá de algún atributo de poder que puedan portar -pistola, penacho o pipa de jefe indio, etc. (en la serie De la seducción del poder). Este esquema de dominación/sometimiento se resuelve a partir de la seducción que el poder mismo ejerce mediante la imagen, un travestismo cultural nada reciente al que ha apelado el poder para seguir ejerciendo sus prácticas de autoridad. Es por ello que el reduccionismo de las figuras humanas y la apelación a principios del diseño gráfico, junto a la estridencia del color, en la hechura de las piezas resultan un guiño al “color field painting”, al minimal art, al neorrealismo (Frank Stella, Ellsworth Kelly, Kenneth Nolan, Bruce Nauman…hasta Yves Klein) , a la vez que una herramienta sutil y válida en función de potenciar la idea de la absoluta objetividad --originaria de una parte de estos movimientos--, en relación con el carácter autónomo del propio objeto artístico, el concepto de poder como productor de cosas y sujetos, saberes y discursos y la realidad que me circunda.”

The renowned Cuban artist Alexander Lobaina presents his work at the Jardín de la Nuit in Torremolinos, after his exhibition in Madrid during the Contemporary Art Week. It is the first time that the work of this masterful artist is shown in Spain and Europe.

The exhibition can be seen from March 24 to 30, 2023; opening on March 24 or at 8 p.m. with the presence of the artist.

Lobaina's work fuses urban visual references such as advertising or kitsch painting, with influences of pop art, hard edge or minimal art, among others. This unique identity of the artist, in works full of energy and humor, serialized in acrylic on 40 x 60 cm. cardboard, generates in the viewer a quasi-hypnotic state that takes him on a visual journey to the artist's private garden.

Lobaina's works celebrate diversity, freedom, life and creativity. El Jardín de la Nuit, where diversity is understood, and the Vesaniart art gallery, co-organizers of the exhibition, are committed to contemporary art as a key and essential tool, integrating people, environments and loves.El reconocido artista cubano Alexander Lobaina presenta su obra en el Jardín de la Nuit de Torremolinos, tras su exposición en Madrid en la semana del arte contemporáneo. Es la primera vez que se muestra la obra de este magistral artista en España y Europa.

La muestra podrá verse del 24 al 30 de marzo de 2023; inaugurándose el 24 de marzo o a las 20 h. con la presencia del artista.

La obra de Lobaina, fusiona referencias visuales urbanas como la publicidad o la pintura kitsch, con influencias del pop art, hard edge o mínimal art, entre otros. Esta seña de identidad única del artista, en obras llenas de energía y humor, seriadas en acrílico sobre cartulina de 40 x 60 cm., genera en el espectador un estado cuasi hipnótico que le traslada en un viaje visual al jardín privado del artista.

Las obras de Lobaina celebran la diversidad, la libertad, la vida y la creatividad. El Jardín de la Nuit, donde la diversidad se entiende, y la galería de arte Vesaniart, coorganizadores de la muestra, apuestan por el arte contemporáneo como herramienta clave e imprescindible, integradora de personas, ambientes y amores.

Paisajes Licuados (Liquefied Landscapes) is the new work of visual artist Mar Aragón, recognized for the personal style of her large-format watercolors. It is an immersive and moving artistic proposal that invites you to immerse yourself in a world of sensations and activates the environmental awareness of those who experience them. La obra consiste en una estructura que emula la descomposición de un paisaje natural invadido por el hierro, lo industrial y lo artificial. Un paisaje tan desolador como hermoso, que eleva nuestra conciencia ambiental como sociedad. El mensaje es claro: si no cuidamos nuestro entorno, acabaremos viviendo en paisajes oscuros e inertes. Espacios opuestos a la fantasía natural del Jardín Botánico-Histórico La Concepción, donde el cuidado y la protección de las especies vegetales representan una indiscutible prioridad. De ahí que pasar de la frondosidad vegetal del botánico a los apocalípticos Paisajes licuadosde Mar Aragón sea un contraste facilitador de la comprensión de la performance.
